chicago trip recap

Monday, December 29, 2014
Over the first weekend in December, the hubs and I took a little trip up to Chicago to visit a friend. Neither of us had ever been, so we were very excited to explore the city!  We were blown away at how beautiful it was, even despite the overcast/foggy weather that prevented us from getting a good view of the lake. We got to see much of downtown as well as Near Northside, Old Town, and Lincoln Park.

Friday, the hubs and I took the train from O'Hare to downtown, left our stuff at our friend's apartment, and started walking around while he was finishing up at work. We first tried to visit the J. Parker rooftop bar at the Hotel Lincoln, but it was under construction. On clear days, we heard, the view of the lake is stunning. We'll definitely have to come back another time to see it for ourselves! We ended up at Marge's Still, Chicago's oldest pub. It was a wonderful, off the beaten path little place to take cover from the cold.
Our friend joined us for dinner at Lou Malnati's for our first taste of Chicago famous deep dish pizza. It seems on the internet and amongst our friends, everyone is split between Lou's and Giordano's. We chose Lou's and were completely impressed with the meal--it was delicious!

Following dinner, we bar hopped along Hubbard Street downtown. Notable stops: Pops for ChampagneHubbard Inn, and Luxbar.

A late night warranted some much-needed sleeping in. We roused slowly and made our way over to The Publican, just west of downtown, for their highly recommended brunch. If you ever visit Chicago, you should definitely make this part of your agenda. The atmosphere was lively and cheerful, filled with natural light and warm wood paneling. Our booth had doors on the open side that you could close to create a semi-private dining space.

We walked off our (amazing) meal downtown, making a quick stop at the Christmas market (way too crowded) and continued on to Millennial Park. On the way to see "The Bean" I was drawn to an adorable little cupcake/macaron shop called Sugar Bliss nestled discreetly next to Macy's.

We walked up Magnificent Mile, stopping at only a few stores before making our way home to rest. After a little nap, we braved the cold for some BYOB dinner at Cafe Sushi in Old Town, followed by drinks at Old Town Pour House and the most delicious cupcakes ever at Molly's Cupcakes in Lincoln Park (note: try the Cake Batter flavor, it's to die for). I loved that they were open late to satisfy my sweet tooth craving, since most bakeries closed much earlier in the evening.

Sunday, we headed back to Old Town for macarons, coffee, and croissants at La Fournette and brunch (and Sunday football watching) at Benchmark.

We returned home to rest and pack before heading back to the airport. The hubs and I had the most wonderful time visiting our friend and exploring Chicago. We can't wait to visit again! xo.

Christmas playlist

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Oh, how I love Christmas music! I started building a huge playlist on Spotify last year and continued adding to it this year. So many new holiday albums dropped in 2014 so I made sure to add those to the mix. I picked 20 favorites from my 500+ song Christmas playlist that are perfect to listen to while baking cookies making messes in the kitchen, cyber Monday shopping, and driving to work! Many are new but I sprinkled in a few older ones that I just can't get enough of. Happy listening! xo.

weekend, first snow, and hot cocoa

Monday, November 17, 2014
Brrr... Hello, Winter!

We got our first "snow" here in North Texas last night. A light dusting, but snow nonetheless. I get so excited when it starts to get wintery outside! The hubs and I cozied up by the fire and watched football and Walking Dead. It's the best way to fight those Sunday blues.

This weekend, we went down to our college stomping grounds in hopes to watch our Aggies BTHO Mizzou (didn't happen...) and see my family. Although traveling always makes the weekend seem to fly by, we had fun seeing friends, tailgating, and watching the game in a local bar to escape the cold/rain.

I'm now fully in holiday mode and have shamelessly begun to listen to my mega Christmas playlist on Spotify (500+ songs!) and plan out my 3 Thanksgivings next week. More details on those to come! I'm also about to start my Christmas shopping. I fully intended to start much earlier to avoid the procrastination and subsequent stress that comes due to being busy with work and school this time of year; however, that did not end up happening. Oh well! I will happily join the masses of other holiday shoppers and enjoy my most favorite time of year. I'll be sharing some gift guides in the coming weeks, so be on the lookout for those!

Until then, why not try out this recipe (via How Sweet It Is) for a delicious, creamy white chocolate hot cocoa made with Lindt truffles. Say what?? I have been on a hot chocolate kick lately but am now dying to try this white chocolate version:

weekend scenes

Friday
Delicious meal with friends at Paco & John, a cozy Mexican-French restaurant in the Near Southside district. Hubs got enchiladas and I got pork. Excellent!
We had to follow dinner with ice cream from Melt. The Blushing Pear flavor is not to be missed!

Saturday
Weekend routine: A&H donuts + homemade latte.
A few of our friends came up from Houston for the TCU-Kansas State game over the weekend. The hubs and I had a great time at our first TCU game! We definitely plan to go to more often.
Sunday
Woke up and had coffee by the fire before heading to our favorite brunch spot--Pour House --with our friends before they left town!
Hubs and I went home for football (and nap time for me) and managed to squeeze in a run for our half-marathon training. We have skipped our "long runs" the past couple of weeks so I was not exactly looking forward to it. The cool, breezy weather and sunset helped make the run much more enjoyable, though. Only a few weeks until the big race!

Hope you had a great weekend! xo.

friday faves // Gap friends & family sale picks

Friday, November 7, 2014
It's Fri-YAY and that means... I'm talking about my favorite things from this week!
Momfessionals
I am loving so many things at Gap lately. When I opened my inbox Thursday morning to see that the Gap Friends & Family Sale had begun, I was so excited! If you have a Gap/Banana/Old Navy card, just show the e-mail at the check out in stores or use the code FFSALE online to get 40% off your entire purchase. I bought some black legging jeans I've had my eye on for months as well as a cute button-down top and some leather slip-on sneaks (finally!), but I've rounded up some more adorable items that I think would be perfect to wear during the holidays!

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8 // 9

ALSO, don't forget-- The GAP CASH program is going on now through November 23. This most definitely guarantees I will be doing some major Christmas shopping at Gap very soon!

Have a wonderful weekend and happy shopping! xo.

monday must-have // jogger pants under $50

Monday, November 3, 2014

I have finally gotten a pair of jogger pants and I'm already in love with them! This Mossimo pair is $15 at Target this week, so go check them out before they are gone!   I found a few other adorable options--all under $50! It's the perfect price point if you are hesitant to try out this trend and don't want to shell out tons of moolah.
1 // 2 // 3 // 4

And here's some inspiration for how to wear your joggers. I love the idea of pairing them with slip-on sneaks for casual weekend errands or heels for a cool date night look! Joggers are so versatile and look great with basic tees, blazers, and denim jackets, too:

What do you think of the jogger pant trend? xo.

friday faves

Friday, October 31, 2014
Happy Halloween!
via
Momfessionals

And yay for Friday Favorites! Linking up once again to wrap up not only the end of the week, but the end of the month, with a few things I have been loving lately:

1. 1989, Taylor Swift
Y'all, I honest to goodness listened to the clips of all the songs on this album when it dropped earlier this week and thought it was just so different from Taylor's usual sound that I couldn't like it. Then, I heard the album in its entirety and I did a 180. I. LOVE. IT. Not only are the lyrics so cleverly and beautifully written, but the beats are PERFECT for my evening runs. The tempo is exactly what I need to maintain a good pace and the songs are just plain fun. Go listen!

2. Count Chocula
This cereal seriously takes me back to the good ol' days. Back then, I was crazy (or "cuckoo") for Cocoa Puffs, Count Chocula, Lucky Charms... all that sugary stuff. Nowadays, I opt for healthier breakfast options but I can't help grabbing a box of this stuff for Halloween every year, since it's apparently now a "limited" release product and is not kept in stores year-round.

3. Ikea Produkt Milk Frother
Just look at this picture. Yeah, a $3 product did that. I've been thoroughly enjoying coffee shop quality lattes most mornings now. There is something about a fluffy layer of foam that makes my morning cup of joe extra special. I deem this frother a MUST BUY.
4. Fall Decor from Michaels
Michaels is already clearing house and making room for Christmas stuff (I know, right??) but this is to our advantage! A ton of their fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving decor is marked 70% off! I got a garland I had been eyeing for only $5,  a cute metal gourd lantern for about $2, and some candy corn colored string lights for less than $2. I probably could have bought way more (and there is a chance I will go back for another pass-through). Garlands, gourds, yard signs, and home decor was mostly under $10, so go check it out if you need some holiday decor!

5. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I just crossed off this book from my reading list and I can't recommend it enough. I could not put it down and actually finished it in about a week. Without giving too much away, the novel is an unconventional, emotional, and raw love story with characters that are both flawed yet likable. This is the first book I've read by Jojo Moyes but I've got One Plus One on my waiting list and can't wait to dive in.

Have a wonderful weekend! xo.
